It is an operating system originally developed in 1969 by a group of AT&T employees at Bell Labs including Ken Thompson, Dennis ritchie and Douglas McIlroy.It is used widely in both servers and workstations.It is portable,multi tasking and multi user in a time sharing configuration.This systems characterized by the use of plain text for storing data; a hierarchical file system; treating devices and certain types of inter-process communication (IPC) as files.
